Bloempot

Bloempot

Bloempot is a small country house, right next to Zuikertuintje and the Bloempot shopping centre, which was built on the grounds of this country house. The name Bloempot (flowerpot) refers to the flowerpot in the façade and the former images of flowerpots on the pillars of the gate.

J. van Ditzhuijzen tells that Aron Henriquez Moron came to Curaçao in 1730 at the age of 20, married Esther Penso and went to work for his wealthy brother-in-law Mosseh Penso. He then bought a ship, focused on freight transport and ship insurance, and bought Bloempot in 1754, which he used as a country house for 30 years. As a typical country house, Bloempot produced fruit and well water for its own use only.

In 1857 the owner protested through the Curaçaosche Courant against the land tax that had been imposed on him. His small plantation had been appraised at 10,000 guilders, and the much larger Klein Sint Joris at 13,000 guilders.

On the right-hand side of the house stands, separate from the dwelling, a rain tank with a beautiful small gable roof and little gable tops.
