A. Brievengat and Surroundings – Part 2 (Continued)

Originally, Brievengat consisted only of the country house (landhuis) and some surrounding agricultural land. The current entrance gate to the country house indicates the size of the original estate.

In 1843, the plantation consisted only of Brievengat, Francisco and Rancho. It was later expanded with various additional parcels of land, eventually covering 503 hectares and extending as far as the roundabout near the pharmacy on Corrieweg. The roundabout, Plenchi Sam Buntin, is named after a coach of the Brievengat baseball club Rising Trotters.

Neighborhood Development

In response to the high demand for housing, the government developed large former plantation estates, leaving the country houses and their immediate surroundings untouched. Brievengat was the first plantation where this took place.

It became the fifth neighborhood in which the government introduced social housing. Around 1960, following Saliña, Parera, Steenrijk and Maripampun, a project was launched comprising 2,390 houses for 10,137 residents. This development, known as Brievengat Bieu, was at the time the largest public housing project in Curaçao. Some of the houses were built to withstand hurricanes.

The houses were originally occupied mainly by Shell workers, under a barter agreement with the government: the government received a favorable price for the building land, while Shell employees were given priority when houses were allocated. Other people with permanent jobs, such as employees of the dock company and the water and electricity company, were subsequently accommodated.

The residents were mostly families, generally aged 40 or older, with children whose average age was over 13.

Brievengat Flourishes

During the 1960s and 1970s, Brievengat underwent significant social development. Local residents, with assistance from Shell, cleared areas that were then used extensively for sporting events.

In 1968, Curaçao's first community center was established here with financial support from the European Union. Initially, it was managed by clergy members who, in addition to their social and cultural work, played an important role in developing education and healthcare.

Residents organized many social activities, including participation in the Scouts, shared-cost parties and picnics.

Brievengat Nobo

In 1973, Brievengat Nobo was completed, providing 875 public housing units for 3,847 residents.

The houses and their surrounding plots were smaller than those in Brievengat Bieu. Having a permanent job was not a requirement, and more young single-parent families, generally aged between 25 and 30 and with young children, were accommodated here.

Brievengat Nobo also received sports fields and space for various small shops and a kresh (daycare center).

Brievengat Nobo and Brievengat Bieu are separated by Vondelstraat. All streets are one-way, and most are named after musicians, writers, composers, poets and artists, particularly local ones.

The Brievengat Parish

Brievengat originally belonged to the parish of Santa Rosa. However, the Brievengat parish itself expanded considerably and eventually included Jongbloed, Tra’i Seru, Schelpwijk, Rancho, the Noordkant plantation, Sosiego, Onverwacht, Monrepos, Bijgelegen, Cas Cora, Damacor and Corrie.

At the initiative of two priests, van der Maas and Kruidenberg, fundraising activities were organized to finance a new church. Since there was no desire to have another church designed by architect Vetter, a competition was held for a new design.

Architect Zingel submitted a new, simple concept in which churchgoers sit in a theater-style arrangement during services.

On January 6, 1966, the new church was consecrated and dedicated to La Birgen di Lourdes, Our Lady of Lourdes. Other more recently constructed churches, including those in Seru Fortuna, Fuik, Koraal Specht and Tera Kòrá, also feature a different architectural style from the older churches.

The Brievengat church became the most popular church on the island, hosting numerous baptisms and weddings.

Brievengat also became known for its Stations of the Cross procession, which has taken place annually during Lent since 1961. The procession moved through the streets of Brievengat, stopping at 14 houses that had a cross in their gardens representing one of the stations.

Former Place Names in Brievengat

Francisco and Rincon

These were extensive tracts of land in northeastern Brievengat, extending to the trankeer, the boundary fence of Ronde Klip. Francisco is the easternmost part of Brievengat.

The Seru di San Francisco ridge lies partly in eastern Brievengat. Rincon means “corner” or “remote place.” Today, houses, factories and several new cemeteries occupy the areas of Rincon and Francisco.

The Santana di Brievengat cemetery is also located here. People buried there include unidentified individuals, people without family, and foreigners.

East of the cemetery once stood Curaçao's second drive-in, the Golden Drive In, owned by the well-known businessman Angel Job. The Curaçao Festival Center now occupies the site.

Janchi Coenraad

Janchi Coenraad, also known as Wanchi Corá, lies in southern Brievengat, north of Jongbloed. The church, medical clinic, schools, government offices and community center now stand here.

Tjechie

Tjechie is the area where the vocational school, formerly known as Feffijk, now stands. The area extends farther east.

Vergenoeging

Vergenoegd, known locally as Ferrenú, is the western part of Brievengat that was incorporated into the area in 1855. Today, it is known as Brievengat Bieu.

In its western section was a consecrated burial ground, Santana di Indjan, also known as Santana di Damú. This archaeological site is located in northwestern Brievengat, at the corner of Andres Belloweg and Bonamweg.

The former Indigenous cemetery of Rancho and Ro’i di Indjan stood here. According to author Father R. Nooyen, it measured 31 by 60 meters.

Today, a car rental and sales business occupies the site.

Schelpwijk

Around 1970, the Shell Pension Fund built 120 houses west of Landhuis Brievengat and close to the Noordkant plantation. The development was prompted by staff expansion and intended for foreign employees involved in establishing new Shell facilities.

The spacious houses were later occupied by Dutch police officers.

The neighborhood's name and its street names refer to the enormous shell mounds once found here. Shell mounds indicate earlier settlement by Indigenous people who ate mainly shellfish. However, the name may also be connected to the Shell company's logo.

Some Schelpwijk street names referring to marine animals are Kaya Diodora, Kaya Karkó, Kaya Kiwa, Kaya Klekonchi, Kaya Kokolishi, Kaya Krewchi, Kaya Paluli, Kaya Rakeliou, Kaya Tapakonchi and Kaya Uster.

Airfield

During the Second World War (1940–1945), Hato Airport could not be used because of heavy military air traffic. Around 1940, a second, smaller airfield was therefore built on the large savanna in western Brievengat, with a runway for smaller aircraft.

Wooden sport aircraft also landed here. For a long time, a windsock remained in place to indicate wind direction. A horse-racing track was later established at this location.

According to T. Bakhuis, producer of the audiovisual series Kompas, the 300-meter-long runway was situated between what are now Nilda Pinto Street and Kaya Tito Soublette. The well-known photographer Fred Fischer is said to have obtained his pilot's license here.

The Coastline Near Brievengat

Moving eastward from the former airfield, the former plantations of Hato, Noordkant, Brievengat, Ronde Klip, Santa Catharina and Koraal Tabak lie in succession.

North of the Sentro Deportivo Korsou (SDK) sports complex, just beyond the Manzaliña woodland, is the Brievengat industrial estate. The government developed it around 1980, and it is managed by the government foundation Curinde (Curaçao Industrial Development).

The industrial estate is fully occupied, and a waiting list has been in place since 2022. Curinde has also since developed a new industrial park on Dokweg.

Beyond the industrial park, the Brievengat coastline extends to Playa Kanoa.

South of the gentle bend lies Buraku di Bientu, an opening in the low limestone terrace connected to the open sea. When the sea is rough, usually around the full moon, seawater is forced upward with tremendous power, forming a column of water.

A little farther east, a small natural bridge has formed in the low terrace. Near Playa Kanoa is an underground inlet called Klein Boka Tabla because of its resemblance to Boka Tabla.

There are deep cracks in the upper surface of this inlet, making it inadvisable to enter the cave.

A little farther along is a popular windsurfing location, next to the small bay of Playa Kanoa. It is one of the few places on Curaçao's northern coast where people can swim relatively safely, partly sheltered from the rough waves.

The government has built a small fishermen's hut here, along with a pier for mooring boats and a slipway.

From Sambumbu: Small Rural Plots and Locations in Brievengat

Dam Blanku (White Dam) is a dam northeast of the country house, where the ground consists of white sand.

Peiladó is a location on the ridge in Brievengat, north of the country house.

Tevredenheid is a small rural plot west of Brievengat and east of Confortabel.

Confortabel is a small rural plot between Brievengat and Rancho.

Rancho Abou is a location in western Brievengat. The name means “low hut” or “hut in the west.”

Tanki di Rancho is a deteriorated tanki — a natural water catchment — in western Brievengat where Indigenous people are said to have lived.

Cas Kibra means “collapsed house” and is located in western Brievengat. The ruins of a stone house stand here, representing the first country house of Brievengat.

Tanki di Lijmu is a deteriorated tanki in western Brievengat, where the ground is grayish and glue-like.

Buraku di Lijmu is located in western Brievengat, near Cas Kibra, and means “clay pit.” Clay was extracted here and used as a binding material in pottery-making.

Rooi di Maria Menchi is a dry riverbed west of the country house.

Poster is a location in western Brievengat, on elevated ground that was once an Indigenous settlement.

Chichi is a location in southwestern Brievengat, west of Wanchi Cora. The name is a woman's house name.

Katje (1865) is a location south of Brievengat and north of Jongbloed.

Sosiego Near Brievengat

There are several former small rural plots in Curaçao called Sosiego, hence the clarification “near Brievengat.”

Sosiego near Brievengat consists of family-owned land, known as tereno di famia. This is an example of an estate that has remained undivided for a long time, often making it unclear who the descendants or heirs of the original owner are.

In the late 1990s, the land was placed under the Stichting Plantage Sosiego foundation. The five-hectare property was divided into 70 plots while preserving the atmosphere and character of the family estate.

This was made possible in part by the new Civil Code, which provided a solution to disputes concerning family-owned land.

Local residents were given the opportunity to purchase land at a low price and formally transfer it to their children. They can now also sell it or take out a mortgage to renovate or extend their houses.

The proceeds from land sales were used, among other things, to pave roads in Sosiego.
